    9. A Recycled Christmas Tree

      A Recycled Christmas Tree

My 2012 Christmas idea is not going to win any votes or prizes, but I had to tell you what we did when a 60' spruce tree in front of our house at the lake came crashing down when Hurricane Sandy blew through Southern Ontario a few weeks ago. A neighbour cut the tree up for us and every piece of it has been put to good use. Some branches have been used as the basis of beautiful outdoor planters for myself and several friends, and others are lining our curved front walkway. Smaller logs are now drying under the deck for next summer's bonfires. The rest of the branches and the biggest blocks of wood have been returned to the woods to be reclaimed by Mother Nature. But the top nine feet of that tree struck gold: they got a second shot at life as our Christmas Tree this year! Now it's not the prettiest tree we've ever had --- in fact, it's pretty much a Charlie Brown tree --- but it did come complete with its own authentic pinecones, and the spindly branches allowed our precious 45-years'-worth of family ornaments to be shown off in all their glory. When Christmas is over, the tree will be returned to the woods to provide shelter and nourishment for the forest creatures, and ultimately some of its pinecones will produce another generation of spruces. Think what a story it will have to tell its children and grandchildren! "See that house over there? Would you believe that in the winter of 2012 I spent over a month in its family room, the centre of everyone's attention, surrounded by beautifully-wrapped gifts, and covered with the most amazing decorations. Let me tell you about the decorations ..."
